Details

The Sail is a small watch at 35mm, so legibility is paramount - it embodies this with a lightly metallic off-white dial, shimmering in the changing light, bringing a depth and textural quality. Black printed hour dots and a chapter ring surround the main dial, again presented in off-white - maximum contrast with minimum fuss.

At the edge of the Sail dial is an outer ring, painted black with white numerals, which is matched by the handset, painted black and filled with lume. This glowing compound matches a double-dot printing at 12 o’clock to aid in low-light time reference.

The Devil's in the Detail

With small diameters comes small parts - dials have less room to display the time and hands have less room to move. Given the little space we have to play with we have tried to enhance the feeling of depth by using multiple tiers for the dial, with an outer ring angled into a contrasting chapter ring, both elevated above the main textured dial. This stadium-like rake leads the eye into the dial over many layers, giving the impression of depth and separation.

WHY COMPLICATE MATTERS?

Of course with small watches legibility is paramount. We worked through countless iterations of hand designs, each one trying to extract the maximum legibility from the dial while simultaneously being original and unique. In the end we chose simplicity over complexity, and opted for a simple tapered hand with rounded ends, large apertures filled with luminous paint and a counter-weighted hairline seconds hand. Why complicate matters when the best answer is almost always the simplest?

Triumph over adversity

Victoria Drummond MBE was the very first female marine engineer in the UK and the first woman member of The Institute of Marine Engineers. What’s inspiring about her story is that, like many women of the early 20th Century, Victoria faced immeasurable barriers to a successful and fulfilling career in a world dominated by men. No such place could be considered more masculine than the world at sea, and becoming a certified Chief Engineer was something Victoria had always wanted.

Victoria’s persistence was ultimately rewarded with a reputation for being amongst the very best marine engineers of her generation. An incredible legacy of triumph over adversity.

Our little tank

As well as keeping the Tay at a touch over 10mm thin, affording a comfortable and unobtrusive fit, we wanted the Tay to have sensational wrist presence for a small watch. As such we have affectionately called this our “little tank” owing to its robust appearance, but diminutive dimensions.
